Why You Bruise Easily
You wake up and there’s suddenly a bruise that has turned purple and yellow on your left leg, while there’s a tender, reddish spot on the back of your arm. Yet you don’t recall bumping into any hard surface recently, and these unsightly and painful bruises are appearing more often. You may be asking yourself — is this a cause for concern?
While bruises happen to anyone, there are some people who are prone to easy bruising. Women, for example, are scientifically proven to bruise easier than men because their skin has more fat and less collagen compared to men’s (the presence of collagen makes men’s skin more dense, allowing it to hold blood vessels more securely). Aside from gender, here are other possible factors on why you bruise easily:
- Excessive straining. Exercise and constant lifting can strain our muscles excessively, which may cause blood vessels to break that lead to bruises.
- Sun damage. Excessive exposure to the sun can burn your skin and cause it to lose resilience. This makes your skin more prone to easy bruising.
- Medications. Certain medicines can affect your blood clotting, which can make bruising more likely to occur.
- Age. As we get older, our skin gets thinner and loses elasticity. Age also causes your blood vessels to become more fragile.
- Genetics. There are instances where weak blood vessels run in the family. If your mom or dad is prone to easy bruising, the reason why you bruise easily may also be hereditary.
- Blunt trauma. This is often caused by hitting the edge of tables, doors, chairs, etc.
When does easy bruising indicate a serious concern?
If you bruise often and easily and the reason is not any of the above, this can be caused by an underlying condition, like a blood clotting disorder or disease. See your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Frequent, large bruises that appear on your back, torso, and face, and appear for no particular reason
- Have a history of significant bleeding
- Suddenly bruise more easily, especially after starting a new treatment or medication
- Have a family history of easy bruising or bleeding
Most bruises disappear after 2-3 weeks, but the pain and swelling that can come with them can be uncomfortable. To let your bruises heal faster, apply Mucopolysaccharide polysulphate (Hirudoid), your go-to cream for the management of bruises.
